QnVERSEAS sales of 11,536 commercial vehicles in December last brought 1957 exports up to 130.794 units to the value of £96,961,051, according to figures issued by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders. December's exports were slightly below those for November, but above the general level for the year. Details appear in the accompanying table. Output of 31,060 vehicles in December took the year's production up to a total of 290,122. Weekly average output in that month at 6,212 compared with 5.580 for the year. Production in 1957 broken clown.into classes was as follows, figures for December alone being in parentheses:— Goods vehicles, road-haulage tractors and special types, 278,755 (29,968); battery-elect 1,869 (146); passenger vehicles, 9,498 (946). Of the first-named class, the analysis by carrying capacity was : up to 15 cwt., 142,148 (15,587); 15 cwt.-3 tons, 61,355 (7.362); 3-6 tons, 51,234 (4,184); over 6 tons, 24,018 (2,835), Passengervehicles comprised 143 (15) trolleybuses and 7,232 (798) single-deck and 2,123 (133e-deck motorbuses. In 1956, 287,272 goods vehicles, tractors and special types were produced, plus 9,678 passenger vehicles and 1,659 battery-electrics, making a total of 298,609. Of these 130.593 were exported.

TEMPO ENTER AUSTRALIA

r-INE of WestGermany's leading light commercial vehicle manufacturers, Vidal and Sohn Tempo-Werke, have launched plans to assemble their vehicles in Australia. Their export director, Mr. Walter Schmidt, has been in Sydney establishing Tempo Australia, Ltd., with German capital. Local finance will be sought later. The company make the Tempo-Matador range of vehicles, including lowloaders, vans, tippers, station wagons, ambulances and small buses. Tempo Australia intend to introduce Australianmade components as soon as possible.

LOADS LIFTED OVER WALL

AS the gateway to the Metropolitan Wharf, Wapping, will not permit the entry of a load 16 ft. wide, a 25-ton mobile crane with a 60-ft. extension was used last week-end by Beck and Pollitzer, Ltd., Southwark Bridge, London, S.E.L to lift six tank sections over the wall from the road.

These sections were additional to. six delivered previously, the 12 forming four tanks for the storage of molasses. The company carried the sections on lowloading trailers drawn by ,‘" E.R.F. and Scammell tractors from Mill

', wall. A route diversion was necessary because of the lack of clearance of the Narrow Street cantilever bridge. The load was 16 ft. 4 in. high.
