A ?PLYING to withdraw a Sunday1-1 afternoon to

connecting Kendal and Meathop Sanatorium, Ribble Motor Services, Ltd., claimed last week that they had been hit by competition from a private-hire concern. The Northern Traffic. Commissioners were told that the private-hire vehicle ran at about the same time as Ribble's bus.

Mr. J. F. Coward, for Ribble, said their service from Kendal started in 1944 for the benefit of visitors to the sanatorium, but it was not well patronized. Four years later it was extended to Grange-over-Sands, but there was no improvement. •

Mr. W. Batters by, district traffic superintendent, said he followed the private-hire bus on February 2, and saw passengers picked up at three places in Kendal. A fare of 3s. was charged for the journey to the sanatorium.

The Commissioners adjourned the hearing, but granted Ribble a dispensation to stop operating the service pending an investigation into the activities of the private-hire . company. Mr. Hanlon pointed out, however, that if it were found that Ribble's was the only regular service available, they might be required to start running again.
