Exhibit :—Two Water-ballast Rollers.

Two of this company's patent waterballast motor rollers, of the latest pat

tern, are exhibited. One of these, known as the " D3 " type, is quite new, and is specially designed for rolling grass. It weighs 33 tons empty, and the hind roller, which measures 4 feet 6 inches in width, is in two parts. Suitable scrapers are fitted, and a gillpattern radiator is employed. The approximate weight of this roller, when equipped with a i2-15h.p., 2-cylinder, Simms engine and in full working order, is 44 tons. The price is £300.

The second exhibit, a heavy motor roller, calls for examination by Borough Surveyors who are interested in the making of asphalt streets or paths. It is fitted with a new arrangement for watering the peripheries of the front and back rolling cylinders, which provision to keep the surfaces of the rollers wet should be of great advantagt when working on asphalt. Our illustration shows that a second tank is fitted behind the one for the cooling water, and it is to this smaller tank that the necessary connections for watering both rollers are coupled. This roller is known as the company's "C2type, and the one on view has been sold to the Corporation of Barrow-inFurness, to which town it will be dispatched immediately after the show. The rollers are of suitable width for foot-paths and bark streets, and Messrs. Barford and Perkins advise us that they have just received an order for a similar roller, though of slightly lighter weight, for the Corporation of Kingston-upon-Hull, this being intended for

asphalting purposes. The one now shown weighs about 5 tons empty, and 51 tons full. These rollers can be fitted with an interchangeable light cylinder for grass, for an approximate expenditure of ,4:28; the makers are, also, prepared to fit hoods for the protection of the driver. The "CI" roller is £295.

We publish a plan of the general arrangement of one of the company's rollers, which, in conjunction with the other illustration on this page, will convey the principal features of the machines. The placing of the watertanks at file back of tile frame forms a useful addition to the weight of the roller and its water contents, the hollow back roller holding from to to t5cwt. of water according to the size of the model. The outside edges of all rollers are rounded off to prevent any cutting of the rolled surfaces, whilst the channel-iron frame is suitably braced. The weight on the front roller remains nearly constant, throughout all the sizes, at about ificwt., and two ratios of gearing, approximately one and three miles per hour, are fitted. The motors can be adapted to run on paraffin, instead of petroleum spirit, at a slight extra cost.
