Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

ISO tank haulage is an even more specialist and expensive sector, almost always multimodal, spanning the UK, Europe and further afield. Any participating firm will need to be in this for the long term, at least according to CM'S publicity-shy but extremely experienced and well-informed industry insider.

ISO containers-typically short and fat because ship deck space is sold on a footprint basiscost £12,000£60,000 (as opposed to £4,000 for a bog-standard box container) and once dispatched may undertake multiple consignments, not returning to base for up to 18 months.

Road transport using twistlock skeletal trailers is employed mainly to and from railheads and ports, so a UK-based concern needs reliable transport partners in each destination country.

Sophisticated and often tailor-made software tracks containers and helps ensure safety and statutory compliance. Tractor units are all fitted with pumps and/or a compressor. Drivers need a lot of training -and, since ISO tank hauliers handle both hazardous and non-hazardous consignments, also need ADR licences and thus command a higher-than-average salary.

ISO specialists tend to work on longterm contracts with international brands in the food and chemical industry. These customers conduct frequent audits to ensure standards are met and their reputation is protected. There must be frequent safety checks of equipment and customers will want to see demonstrable evidence of official accreditation. UK companies in this sector include Hoyer, Bulkhaul and Huktra.
