London Gateway Port and its logistics centre will create thousands of jobs in Essex.

Chris Tindall reports.

THE GOVERNMENT HAS given the go-ahead for a new port and multimodal logistics centre on the Thames.

Transport Under-Secretary Gillian Merron gave final approval to the plan for the I .5bn London Gateway Port at Shellhaven. Thurrock, which will bolster the UK's growing trade in containers. Planning permission was also given for one of Europe's largest logistics parks that will integrate road, rail and sea freight.

Both developments will be operated by DP World, which took on the projects after acquiring P&O in March 2006. Construction is due to begin later this year; the site will take up to 15 years to develop.

Merron says: "This substantial development has the potential to create many jobs in the Thames Gateway Growth Area, including a possible 1,900 jobs which the promoters forecast for the port alone," Essex County Council welcomes the decision—it has secured almost £1.25m from DP World for road upgrades in the area to mitigate the environmental impact of the development.

The council says the scheme will reverse some of the historic underinvestment in roads in the area, with £250,000 already allocated to upgrade the Five Bells junction on the All Another £970,000 has been earmarked for further improvements to the A13.

Council leader Lord Hanningfield says: "I'm delighted that Shellhaven has finally been approved and even more pleased the people of Essex will reap considerable benefits in terms of a major jobs bonanza, exciting new business opportunities, increased skills training and long-awaited road improvements."
