• Dover-based Mike Beer Transport is set to expand its Continental bulk haulage business following its purchase of lipro from the Star Cargo Group.

According to MBT boss Mike Beer, the deal covers all assets and goodwill; it includes a fleet of 17 bulk semi-trailers, most of which were previously hauled by subcontractors. The acquisition increases Beer's fleet to some 60 vehicles and extends the company's presence in what Beer describes as "near Europe".

"Tipro's business is virtually identical to what we do," he adds. "The opportunity came up; they contacted us, and after meeting with them we decided to take it."

MBT is also planning to move to a purpose-built 4.5-acre site at the port zone of Whitfield, Kent within the next nine months.

The 11.6m headquarters will consolidate the company's operations on one site, including its
