TA MEETING in Bonn last week Norman awler, Minister for Transport, told his uropean colleagues that Britain has three lain transport objectives. He said, "They .e freedom from restriction for operators, eedom of choice for the user and the lcouragement of private enterprise and itiative."
Mr Fowler told the minister that the ritish Government would not interfere ith transport in its operational role. "We Oct the idea of direction of freight. The a.cision of how goods have to be moved must be left to the customer," he said. He expressed the view that direction of freight would lead to a new bureaucracy and inefficiency. The Minister said that he was convinced that both road and rail should pay their true track costs.
Mr Fowler also explained how the "de-, nationalisation" of NFC companies would take place. Mr Wedgewood Berm has warned that the Labour Party will not compensate shareholders of public sector companies if ever it is returned to power.
