Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

AIn the category of general goods vehicles,

i.e. vans arid lorries excluding agricultural vehicles, the proportion of vehicles fitted with diesel engines continues to increase. In this category in 1961 the number of vehicles registered for the first time analysed by type of fuel (with the 1966 figures in brackets) were: Electric 1.800 (1,900); petrol 147,800 (137,700) and diesel 65,400 (80,500).

It will be seen that compared with an overall increase in the six years from 215,000 to 220,200 in the number of vehicles registered for the first time, the number of goods vehicles fitted with diesel engines increased by over 15,000.

However, this trend towards dieselengined vehicles is being supplemented by a simultaneous trend towards larger goods vehicles. Thus in 1961, 66,000 of the 215,000 goods vehicles registered for the first time had an unladen weight over 2 tons. By 1966 the corresponding figure was 75,300. Moreover, as the full impact of the amended C and U Regulations permitting larger vehicles takes effect there will be still greater use of diesel engines and demand for their maintenance.
