HOW POWELL DUFFRYN CATERS FOR CONTINENTAL REFUSE DISPOSAL DEMANDS

by Paul Brockington

• Until 14 to 18 months ago, none of the waste collection equipment produced by Powell Duffryn Engineering Co. Ltd., Cambrian Works, tvlaindy, Cardiff, was exported. A waste collection vehicle is invariably employed in conjunction with a large number of containers or bins which are relatively cheap to produce and are uneconomic to export. It was expedient, therefore, for overseas users of such equipment to purchase the vehicle and containers from a local producer.

Two years ago Powell Duffryn acquired the Geesink NV company of Weesp, Holland, and this has enabled production in this country and in Holland to be phased according to need and availability. Currently the UK /Dutch ratio of production is 50/50, the majority of containers being produced in Holland.

Devaluation has favoured manufacture in this country and in response to a recent export order for a Dumpmaster from France, the containers as well as the equipment were made in this country.

Dumprnasters and Dinosaurs are being exported to France, Germany, Belgium and Sweden, and equipment has been exported to South Africa, Nigeria and Venezuela. Powell Duffryn equipment is made under licence to Dempster Brothers Inc. of Knoxville, Tennessee, USA, who export to the Americas and Canada, while the British company can export to Eastern European countries as well as countries in Western Europe and to the African continent.

Machines comparable with the Dumpster lever-type demountable-container vehicle are readily available on the Continent, and demand from overseas is mainly for the larger machines. These include Dumpmaster compaction bulk collectors with bin-overcab loading and Dinosaur tipping-frame vehicles which incorporate an hydraulically operated racking mechanism for unloading and loading detachable containers to and from ground level. Interest has been shown by potential overseas customers in the Dinotrailer, the trailer version of the Dinosaur, and in the Dino-Packer container fitted with an hydraulically operated compactor giving 4 to 1 compaction. These supplement the Combopacker portable site compactor (4 to 1), the static site packer, the Statpacker compactor (also 4 to 1), the Dinomaster compaction container equipped with loading arms and the Leach rear-loading high-compression collector. Dumpm asters and Dinosaurs are produced with capacities up to 90 cu. yd. and 40 Cu. yd. respectively, while Dinotrailers are available that can accommodate up to 50 cu. yd. of refuse.

Elaborating on the growth of mechanized waste-material handling, Mr. W. F. N. Joynes, sales director of the Powell Duffryn Materials Handling division, points out that the waste per capita produced by the populace increases with the standard of affluence of the country. Mr. Joy nes says that the yield of waste in industry increases disproportionately to an increase in production. For example, a 5 per cent production increase May well increase the amount of waste by 10 per cent.

On the domestic side, the growing demand for pre-packed foods and for ade quately packed household goods is also a function of affluence.

Examples of recent or immediately pending export of machines to the Continent include a DAF-based Dumpmaster 27DB-DP45 machine to the Ordures Usine company of Paris, a similar vehicle to Trans-Ordures of Paris; a Dumpmaster 24DB-CA60 collector, based on a GMC chassis, to the Opel plant in Bochum and similar machines to the GMC plant in Antwerp; a 27DB-40SDP on a Volvo chassis to the Volvo works in Grithenburg, Sweden; two Dumpmaster DB73 compaction trailers to the municipality of Zeist, Holland.

The machine dispatched to Ordures Usine is a standard 27 cu. yd. outfit giving 3 to 1 compaction. Rated at 22 tons gross in this country (and 24 tons in France) the DAF 6 x 4 chassis is equipped with a 6-ton front axle which is not available on otherwise suitable French chassis. A rating of this order is essential if Dumpmaster equipment is fitted to the chassis because of the high imposed load created by the over-cab bin lifter.

The loading arms are capable of gross lifts of' up to 4,5001b in containers of 1-cu. yd. to 6-cu. yd. capacity. In common with other types of Dumpmaster, the packer plate is operated by a 25-ton hydraulic ram. Net payload of a 22-ton g.v.w. vehicle is 9 tons.

An automatic hopper cover with side shields is fitted to the Dumpmaster supplied to GMC Antwerp. Hydraulically operated, the movement of the cover is sequenced with the operation of the loading arms so that the arms are arrested after the bin has been lifted from the ground to allow the cover to be raised; the cover is returned automatically when the bin is clear of the loading zone.

Whereas the Dumpmaster supplied to Ordures Usine is equipped with direct-pull (DP) lifting arms which are operated by side rams mounted on the body, this machine is af the older type in which the arms are =Tied by a bracket attached to a chassis hitch plate forward of the body.

An unusual feature of the Bochum vehicle is an hydraulically operated tailgate, the ram being located horizontally above the body. Power operation of the tailgate is not normally required because the gate is operated by pressure of the material created by movement of the packer plate. Two similar vehicles are being supplied to the GMC plant in Antwerp. The chassis is a GMC 01MWM 8720A 6 x 4 type with a wheelaase of 15 Sin, powered by a petrol engine. Capacity of the body is 24 cu. yd.

Of 27-cu. yd. capacity, the Dumpmaster Z7DB-40S, destined for the Volvo works, is af the direct-pull (DP) type and is mounted an a Volvo FB86 6 X 2 chassis. The rating al' the lifting arms has been reduced from 1,5001b to 4,0001b to reduce the load on the 'rant axle to the maker's rating. A loadransfer type of bogie is fitted to the chassis.

The compaction type of trailer for Zeist las a capacity of 65 cu. yd. and is of the .andem-bogie type, hauled by a two-axle ractive unit. Five-axle outfits of this type an carry up to 73 cu. yd. of material.
