Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

I NFORMATION on the repair and overhaul of Morris petrol and diesel engines made between 1945 and the present time is given in a book entitled "Morris Engines" by D. V. W. Francis, published by George Newnes Ltd., Southampton Street, London, W.C.2, at £1 I s.

Engines covered range from the 803 c.c. petrol unit employed in 5-cwt. vans based on the Series II Morris Minor car to the 5-7-litre diesel for current 7-tormers. Main components are grouped together in chapters and repairs and overhauls up to the stage when machine tools are needed are dealt with simply and fully. For example, on valves and valve gear the method of grinding-in valves is explained in detail but, for an excessively pitted face, the recommendation is to "have the valve trued-up on a grinding machine ". No help is given on the limit for valve face grinding. In many other respects the book fails to give what would be really valuable information of use to a skilled fitter, Data tables and illustrations included will be useful but a number of obvious errors were noted in the tables. As with most makes of its type, "Morris Engines" does not give any coverage to the diagnosis of obscure or unusual faults. So far as it goes it is good, but an experienced fitter will find little he does not already know. A.J.P.W.
