TWO applications to convert 15 contract A vehicles to A licence were successful at Chester last Friday. Williams Bros. (Treuddyn) Ltd. and Williams Bros. (Queensferry) Ltd., the applicants, wanted the vehicles to carry solid fuel, sulphur phosphates, potash and other commodities within North Wales, Lancashire, Cheshire, Staffordshire, Midlands and South Wales. At present these units were on contract to Rae Ltd.
Mr. J. Edward Jones, for the applicants, said that the main reason for the applications was economy of operation, and return loads could be carried on a public A licence. Williams Bros. carried a great deal of traffic from the docks on Merseyside, but sometimes when large quantities were unloaded, the vehicles left only partially loaded because they were on contract to one company.
Mr. E. Hopkins, representing Rae Ltd., said there were three principal associated companies, two dealing in solid fuel and one in limestone. With an open A licence, the applicants would be able to carry goods for all these organizations. The applications were unopposed and the North Western deputy Licensing Authority, Mr. A. H. Jolliffe, granted the new proposals. He said that lie did not think it necessary to hear customers.
