COVENTRY City Council's transport committee has confirmed that it proposes that buses are to be bought from outside the city. The recommendation is subject to City Council confirmation on June 11.
As reported in The Commercial Motor, May 3, a month ago when the committee recommended the purchase of 22 bus chassis from Leyland Motors Ltd. costing L65,790—the lowest tender submitted—shop stewards at the Daimler works in Coventry protested. Their concern has been providing most of the city's buses over the past 30 years.
The committee's recommendation also provided for the supply of 22 76-seater bodies by Willowbrook Ltd. at a cost of £75,900. These will be the first new Willowbrook double-deck bodies purchased by Coventry.
Coventry District Committee of the Confederation of Shipbuilding and Engineering Unions, supported by a shop stewards' deputation, met the Labour group controlling the City Council. Because of the protest the recommendation was withdrawn at the April Council meeting. Now the transport committee has reaffirmed its decision.
