THE Suez crisis turned an expected loss of £81,245 in the year ended March 31 into a profit of £109,202 for Salford Transport Department. The additional revenue came from the surcharge on fares, an increase in the number of passengers carried because of petrol rationing, and savings—whicf were substantial—from the compulsory 5 per cent. reduction', in mileage run during the period of the crisis.
In spite of last year's good figures, it is estimated that there will be a loss on the current year's working if the wage demand now being negotiated for municipal bus workers is granted in full.
