HE railways do not expect to retain any significant amount of the extra passenger traffic that they gained during fuel rationing. This admission was made by Mr. E. A. Dixon, chief passenger officer of British Railways, before the Transport Tribunal last week.

The British Transport Commission were applying to raise fares on the railways and London Transport services.. Mr. Dixon said that no advance was at the moment proposed in the general level (1.88d. per mile) of ordinary rail fares.

Mr. E. S. Fay, Q.C., for the Commission, revealed that the railways expected a loss of £75m. next year, made Lip of £35m. on working and .£40m. for central charges. Since last year, he said, railway expenses had risen by £25rn.
