Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Global demand is exceeding the supply of secondhand tippers, leaving those willing to export them in the money.

Iis common knowledge that used tippers are in short supply domestically but demand from burgeoning international markets could further inflate already rising prices. Exporters coming into the UK and looking to snap up secondhand tippers from dealers and auctions are increasingly willing to pay more to get the vehicles they want.

Changes in legislation in countries like Cyprus, which now longer allows chassis conversions from tractors into tippers has upped the ante, but demand is also strong in other countries.

Italy is undergoing a major road construction project which has pushed demand for used tippers through the roof. It has been forced to supplement its tipper pare from neighbouring countries, forcing exporters to look elsewhere.

India is undergoing a revolution in road construction with a programme of 14.000km of new road. With India increasing its mining capacity, Hyva, best known as a wet-equipment manufacturer in the UK • is building 800 tippers a month to keep pace with demand.

So what does this mean for the UK used tipper market? Well, if you have one for sale and you have the right contacts its next job could be shifting mud out of Mumbai (Bombay in old money).

Sourcing used vehicles from Western Europe for export to growing economies can be a lucrative business. But maintaining supply is bound to present problems because production has not increased here.

Figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders show that last year production of new 8x4 tippers fell 8% to just 1,925 vehicles. •
