Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

The government is coming under pressure to upgrade the 130-mile Al 4 before gridlock renders it unuseable. Guy Sheppard reports.

THE A14 DUAL carriageway is being dubbed the largest car park in East Anglia as part of a campaign to upgrade it into a motorway.

The Freight Transport Association (FTA) claims the 130-mile long road linking the Midlands with Felixstowe suffers from mounting traffic congestion, poor safety and had design.

It says upgrading the section between the Mu 1 and Huntingdon to three lanes in both directions should be a minimum requirement.

Louisa BeHee, FTA regional policy manager, says: "There is congestion on the road every day of the week, whi le during the rush hour the A14 looks more like the largest car park in East Anglia than a road."

The Highways Agency says a number of improvements are already taking place, including around the A14's junction with the Ml and the M6.

However, hauliers agree with the FTA that the improvements need to be more extensive.

Stephen Sanderson, MD of Stephen Sanderson Transport in Market Harborough, says: "Between Huntingdon and Cambridge you have to be through before seven in the morning and it's again horrendous between 4pm and 5.30pm."

Mike Wilson, traffic co-ordinator for Green & Skinner (Haulage) in Ipswich, says:"It would be lovely to make the whole A14 motorway, but there's probably not enough money to pay for it. The best thing would be to focus on those stretches around Huntingdon and Cambridge."
