calls from consumers, after office hours. A small fleet of Austin .7 h.p. vans, equipped with tools and carrying spare meters, etc., is stationed at the Council House from 6 p.m., during the first five days of the week, from 1 p.m. on Saturday and all day on Sunday.

The fitter drivers in attendance, who work on a rota scheme, remain on duty until approximately 11 p.m. each night, or until the whole of the emergency calls have received attention. An Unusual Type or Roller.

We publish on this page a picture of a special type of roller which has recently been constructed by Marshall, Sons and Co., Ltd., Gainsborough, for Durham County Water Board. It will be used for consolidating the embankments of a new reservoir at present under construction at Wearhead.

Power is supplied by a steam engine capable of developing approximately 100 b.b.p., and the steam, at a working pressure of 275 lb. per sq. in., is generated by a vertical boiler. This type of boiler has been used owing to the 'steep inclines to be negotiated, tffe gradient, in some instances, being no le.sa than 1 in 3. The usual locomotive multi-tubular type of boiler is unsuitable, owing to the great fluctuations in the water level.

The roller has two speeds, 2 m.p.h. and 4 m.p.h., and can run at those speeds in either direction. The main dimensions are as follow: Overall

length, 23 ft. 6 ins. ; overall width, 12 ft. 6 ins.; weight in working order, 'approximately 16 tons ; rear rolls, 10 ft. diameter, width 3 ft.; front rolls, 7.ft. diameter, width 2 ft. 6 ins.
