It won t have escaped the attention of many readers that the truck sector is in a bit of a state at the moment. One by-product of the fact that few people are buying trucks is that manufacturers are reluctant to invest in promoting their products to the remaining buyers, and an early casualty has been the traditional press fleet. Fewer demonstrators means fewer tests, and our coverage of single heavy vehicles has been at its lowest for a long time. However, only one top-rank manufacturer, MAN, failed to provide at least one vehicle for test, although DAF and Hino were late enough in the year that you'll have to hang on a week or three to read them. Isuzu and Avia (formerly Daewoo) provided new material as they moved into new weight sectors.

Fortunately, the van-makers were on hand to redress the balance; highlights including the return of Hyundai and the arrival of the all-new Nissan NV200, aiming to create a new sector to itself.

Two trends continue in the van world: improved driver appeal, and, of course, improved planet appeal as fuel consumption and emissions are steadily reduced.

To compensate for the lack of individual tests, we've carried out more group tests than ever, both alone and in conjunction with our Continental colleagues. These head-to-heads have covered vehicles as disparate as small alternative-fuel vans and top-of-the range tractors. We fully intend to expand on these group tests, which, we think, provide you with a valuable viewpoint on your vehicle acquisitions — if we're wrong, we're sure you'll let us know. •
