A Rhymney Valley haulier has had his licence suspended after a catalogue of maintenance defects was revealed.

Stephen Littlewood, who trades as STL Transport, had been called before the Welsh Traffic Commissioner David Dixon at a Barry disciplinary inquiry but failed to appear.

Vehicle examiner Robert Williams said that there had been unsatisfactory maintenance investigations and warning letters dating back to 1995. A maintenance investigation and a check on tachograph records was arranged for last July but it did not go ahead due to a family bereavement.

Littlewood held a licence for eight vehicles and 22 annual tests had resulted in 15 failures—a failure rate of 68%—

with a 53% failure rate brake performance. The eolith tion of the vehicles caused con cern, with tyres showing cord: fractured and worn brake disc: low fluid levels, wheels distorte and body panels insecure.

Adjourning the proceeding and suspending the Deem Dixon said he understood ther were specific reasons wh Littlewood could riot attend th inquiry, so it would not be fair t come to a conclusion over hi licence. Littlewood was a sol proprietor and he did not kns who was running the busines Letters had been returned.

A member of the Traffic Are staff had spoken with someon at Littlewood's operating centr who acknowledged receivir recent correspondence, givir them plenty of time to resporn Quite clearly there were safel issues in addition to dim matters that concerned hir Dixon said.
