FORMER Tyne and Wear PTE purchasing and stores superintendent Thomas Steward has been given a six months suspended jail sentence after he admitted four charges of corruption.
Newcastle Crown Court heard last week that Mr Steward, of North Shields, had accepted a colour TV set and hundreds of pounds in exchange for placing "giant" anti-freeze contracts with GNU Autoparts. He was fined £1,000 with £500 costs.
In addition, GNU financial controller Denis Tait, of New Hartley, was fined £450, and former GNU director Barry Staplehurst £600 with £250 costs after admitting to joint charges of corruption, having offered gifts and cash to obtain orders.
