ORK has designed a new range of low-height semi-trailer chassis aimed at giving greater cubic capacity within the overall 4.2m (13ft 9in) height limit recommended by Armitage.

Known as the LD/SN range, the trailers feature a low neck depth of 102mm (4in). York says that this has been achieved by constructing the forward mainrails (that is, from the front cross-member to the rear of the landing gear) as a tapered ISO profile box section to give the chassis maximum torsional rigidity.

This taper progressively increases the section strength as the load increases, so counteracting the tendency for the forward section to "droop", particularly when the laden trailer is standing uncoupled from the tractive unit.

York claims that this design, which the company hopes to patent, accepts the standard fifth-wheel plate across the main rails.

The low height has provided an extra 3 cum (110cuft) with the trailer being suitable for a curtainsided or TIR body.

The rear platform height is 1264mm (50in) on a tandem axle trailer running on 11-22.5 x 20 tyres.

The new trailers will be available in single, tandem and triaxle forms with a maximum load of 12 tons through the kingpin.
