DOVER District Council could save up to 033,000 by repairing rather than replacing vans and lorries in its fleet, according to Councillor George Tyler.
After Mr Tyler criticised the council's vehicle-buying prodramme, the technical services committee agreed to block the further sale or purchase of vehicles.
The council's £136,000 spending programmme for 1981 could be reduced by £93,000 even allowing for "massive repairs" on vehicles in the existing fleet, believes Mr Tyler.
He says that fully-equipped ambulances with MoT certificates have been sold for as little as £350 and that a P-registration refuse vehicle was recently sold at auction for £400, though its replacement price was £32,000.
Mr Tyler, who is a director of a company which buys and sells secondhand vehicles, says that other councils are guilty of wasting ratepayers money on needless vehicle replacement.
