Mr. Joseph Henry Hanks has been appointed an assistant divisional superintendent for the south division of London Transport's central bus netWork. Mr. Hanks, who is 60, began his bus career in 1929 as a conductor at Merton garage with the former London General Omnibus Co. In 1955 he was appointed a chief road inspector and took up duties with a new bus-running control, which was specially formed to improve the regularity of services crossing central London. In 1958 he was appointed a district superintendent. The East Midlands area secretary of the Traders Road Transport Association, Alderman William Dyer, has been nominated by the Conservative group of Nottingham City Council to he the city's next sheriff. Aid. Dyer is the present leader of the Conservative group and holds the post of vice-chairman of the council's finance, transport and general purposes committee.

Mr. James Edward Oliver has been appointed an assistant divisional superintendent for the east division -of London Transport's central bus network. Mr. Oliver began his bus career in 1946 as a conductor at Palrners Green garage. He was appointed a district superintendent in 1961 and since 1962 he has been in charge of the district covering services operated from Tottenham, Clapton and Stamford Hill garages.

DivisiOnal managers Mr. E. G. Thompson (South Western), Mr. .1. McKellar (Eastern)-and Mr. L. F. Clarke (South Eastern), of the Cleveland Petroleum Co. Ltd., have retired after 13, 32 and 30 years' service respectively. Their successors, in sequence, are Mr. A. S. Jones, Mr. F. R. Marshall and Mr. D. J. Sinclair. Mr. A. C. Harrison will succeed Mr. A. S. Jones as North Eastern divisional manager. Mr. T. D. II. Watson-Wood, transport manager of Geo. H. Rutter (Bedford Carrier Co.) Ltd., of Wolverhampton, has been appointed to the board of directors, with effect from April 1 this year He will continue in his present capacity as director of transport.

Mr. Peter Fieldsen has been appointed assistant chief engineer of The Villiers Engineering Co. Ltd., of Wolverhampton. Mr. Eieldsen, aged 32, joins the Villiers design team from the Coventry branch of The Ford Motor Co. Ltd., where he held a senior post in the diesel-engine development section. Before joining the Ford Co. in 1961 he was in the research and development department of The Standard Motor Co. Ltd., and from 1959 to 1961 was a senior design engineer with Girling Ltd.

Mr. J. Greenhalgh has been appointed liaison engineer of Atkinson Vehicles Ltd., of Preston, and will be responsible for all technical sales inquiries.

Mr. Ivor R. Day has been appointed area manager of the Cardiff and Barry depots of the Western Welsh Omnibus Co. Ltd. Mr. Day joined the company as a conductor in 1937. After war service he resumed work at Barry depot as a cash clerk in 1946. In 1950 he was transferred to the traffic department and was made

chief traffic clerk in 1955. "

Mr. John Cliff, North East divisional superintendent for Shell-Mex and B.P. Ltd., has retired after 43 years' service with the company.

Miss A. M. Walker, governing director for many years of the haulage firm of A. M. Walker Ltd., at Cosby, Leics, was married at Amersham, Bucks, to Viscount Hall, an 82-year-old Welsh peer, whose home is at Germains Lodge. Amersham. Miss Walker, who is 67, took charge of the haulage firm in 1923 and after nationalization in 1949 became group manager of the Midland division of the Road Transport Executive.

Mr. Wyaford T. Williams, secretary of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, has become chairman of the national executive committee of R.o.S.P.A. in succession to Alderman S. L. Meggeson. Mr. Williams is also chairman of the management and finance committee. Mr. D. R. Greig, the public policy executive of the Automobile Association, succeeds Mr. Williams as chairman of the national road safety committee.

Sir John Richardson, has accepted an invitation to become London Transport's medical consultant in succession to the late Lord Evans. Sir John is physician to St. Thomas' Hospital and consulting physician to the Metropolitan Police.

UYDRAULICALLY powered landing gear on an American boxyan semi-trailer allows the front to be lowered to the ground for loading and unloading. The trailer has been given the name Kneeling Nelly and was designed by L. D. Keller of Associate Grocers Inc., Seattle, Washington, the unit being produced by Aero-Liner Co. of Spokane. Washington.

The system used for raising and lowering is similar in design to that of the Forelode semi-trailer made by Charles Pitt (Barton Stacey) Ltd., and described in The Commercial Motor of July 19,

1963. It is made up of three independent hydraulic cylinders, hydraulic power being supplied by a pump, driven by a 5-h.p. petrol engine. The engine and pump are mounted as a unit on the underside of the body just behind the landing gear.

Full-height double doors are fitted to the front end of the body as well as to the rear and these fold back and clip against the sides. Inside the front doors there is a 5-ft. ramp which is lowered for-loading and unloading from the front but which also serves as a bulkhead when in the raised position.
