MR. R. DURHAM, chairman of the Northern area of the R.H.A., claims that intensive rate-cutting in the haulage industry is responsible for hauliers taking second place in the country's bankruptcy list and that his association approves recent comments on the matter by the T.U.C. He states that loads for 15-tonners today are anything from 10s. to I5s. cheaper than in 1952 because of the increasing amount of rate-cutting, which is making it difficult for some hauliers to obtain work. Heavy penalties on "get rich quick" concerns which disregard working hours and so on for the purpose of cutting their rates are urged by Mr. Durham. He suggests that the Licences of such offenders should be permanently withdrawn.
