Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Commercial Motor " • dated /January 10, page 559, you refer to the appointment of Alderman F. J. Carr. as a .Licensing Authority for the Northern Area. Similarly, in your issue of January 24, page 614 you say that Councillor J: Joyce has beers appointed a Licensing Authority for this ,area.

The position .is, that these gentlemen have been appointed, by the Minister of Transport to be Traffic Commissioners for the Northern Traffic Area, in accordance with the provisions of Section 63 of the Road Traffic Act, 1930. In order that this may. be made clear, .1 should be glad, therefore, if you would be so good as • to Correct the misstatements which appeared in your

issues of January 10 and 24. H. W. A. BLEACH, Clerk to the Traffic Commissioners. Northern

Traffic Area. • Newcastle-upon-Tyne, 1.

[Since the publication of the Transport Bill, we have been particularly requested, as have other road transport journals, not to refer to the Traffic Commissioners as such, but to call them Licensing Authorities. This is to avoid any possibility of their functions being confused with those of the British Transport Commission, referred to in the Bill. We appreciate, of course, that the Bill is not yet Jaw, and that Mr. Bleach certainly is correct in his' strict interpretation, but we shall continue, as requested, to use the term Licensing Authority.—En.]
