GOODS transport by road was con%—.1 trolled as far back as the 13th century, said Mr. Percy Sharman, Master of the Worshipful Company of Carmen, speaking in • London on January 29. The company at that time had the sole right to ply for hire and convey merchandise by road into and from the city.
"This measure ,of control, however," continued Mr. Sharman, "fell far short of what the •Government is now proposing."
The Government was much at fault in ignoring the unanimous demand of trade and industry that a public inquiry should be held before the country was committed to a scheme which might irretrievably damage its industrial prosperity.
