Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

AS SOON AS I opened the contents pages of last week's Commercial Motor (3(1 November),! noticed a theme to your stories: red tape!

The roadtest was the latest Stralis, and the big thing about it is that it meets Euro-4.1t wasn't just built to be strong, thrifty and productive, it was built to follow European emissions rules.

Then you had a story on the AD R rules covering light vans and another warning of tougher penalties for speeding as if lorry drivers were kids in hot hatchbacks.

After that was the story that Vosa might be being prepared to be sold off_ So stricter rules all round and maybe private firms enforcing them.

A lot of the lorries I drove were slow, noisy and hard work. We had to rope.sheet and handball loads. But we could find a proper transport cafe, no one told us to put our fags out or not to eat a decent fry-up and we didn't have new rules from Europe every week.

With Euro-4 and electronic tachos with 'smart cards', rip-off parking costs and spiralling diesel prices, I'm glad to be out of it.

They say there's a shortage of drivers and I'm not surprised. To all you youngsters getting into the game I say good luck you're going to need it.
