el More than 1,500 commercial vehicles were stopped and checked at 59 sites nationwide last week as part of the latest Operation Mermaid.

During the multi-agency check, which was co-ordinated by Staffordshire Police, vehicle examiners issued 203 immediate prohibitions and 210 received delayed prohibitions. Brake and tyre defects were the main source of problems.

Traffic examiners checked 1,407 vehicles and issued 68 prohibitions for overloading.
