Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

DESP1TE strong representations by objectors that the ease should be heard forthwith, the North Western Deputy Licensing Authority at Preston last week granted an adjournment of an application by Mr. J. R. Entwistle, Hindley. Wigan, to add two vehicles totalling 81 tons unladen weight to his A licence

The British Transport Commission, Liptrot Bros., Ltd., Platt Bridge, Wigan, Messrs. Stringfellow Bros., Atherton. Messrs. G. Tinsley and Son, Wigan, and Messrs. E. and T. Eaves. Ashtonin-Makerfield. objected.

Mr. J. A. Dunkerley, for the applicant, said that his most important witness, a representative of Remploy, Ltd., had received an urgent message to go back to Manchester immediately for an important meeting with Ministry of Labour officials concerning petrol rationing. As the essence of the application was the surrender of Iwo contract-A licences held by Remploy, and the replacement of them by A licences, he was bound to ask for an adjournment.

Mr. H. D. Mace, for the haulier objectors. said that he had been instructed to oppose any adjournment. The application was to surrender contract-A for A licences, and he understood the applicant had given certain undertakings at a previous application for an A licence which he had not fulfilled.

Mr. Dunkerley said that the B.T.C. had adopted a reasonable attitude. That of the other objectors was unrealistic. Supporting Mr. Dunkerley, Mr. R. C. Oswald, for the Commission, said that the application would be bitterly contested and should not be heard in two sittings.

The Authority said that a full day Would be allotted to the next hearing.
