DECISION on an application by Blackpool Corporation for a general increase in fares on their but; and tram services was last week reserved by the North Western Traffic Commissioners.

Six other municipal undertakings are proposing higher fares, and two company operators have already lodged applications.

The Blackpool application, which was designed to raise revenue by £82,000, sought increases ranging from 1 d. on 2d. fares to 3d. on is. 4d. fares. If approved, passengers will travel fourfifths of a mile for 2d. and pay Id. for successive half-miles.

The Commissioners refused an application by Ribble Motor Services. Ltd.. to abolish contracts on certain routes in.Poutton impinging on services run by Blackpool. [Blackpool has already abolished contracts and concession fares.] On Tuesday, Coventry City Council approved higher fares suggestions designed to yield an extra £220,900 by March, 1958. The bus undertaking faces a loss of £60,500 at the end of the current year, and one of £83.500 in 1957-58.

Nottingham to Apply?

Faced with an estimated deficit of £65,000 on the current year's working, Nottingham Transport Committee are to ask the city council to agree to a £138,000 fares application being made. The council will consider the proposals next month.

Leeds City Council were this week considering a plan of the transport committee to revise fares to raise an extra £250,000 in a full year.

The recent wage award to bus workers, which will cost it £10.200 a year, has led the Burnley, Colne and Nelson Joint Transport undertaking to seek higher fares.

Cardiff Transport Committee last week approved proposals estimated to bring in a further £113,000 a year.
