Ephraim Aldridge of Hadley, Telford was killed instantly when the truck, operated by Wolverhampton-based Global Meats, rolled down a slope, pinning him against the steel gates.

The West Bromwich inquest heard that the truck's handbrake might not have been working properly. Michael Thomas of Michael Thomas Meats, who was helping Aldridge unload at the time of the accident, told the inquest how he had tried to move the truck off Aldridge. He thought handbrake was Faulty but a vehicle inspector who checked the truck later that day said Thomas might have had difficulties with the brake because he was unfamiliar with an air braking system. The inspection found no faults with the truck or its braking system. Coroner David Prichard adjourned the hearing Rending further inquiries.

J A Staffordshire driver who managed to steer his runaway truck away from a group of children and into a recycling bank has been praised by firefighters. Self-employed driver David Richards yelled at passers-by to get out of the way as he smashed through a car park barrier and into the container after the throttle on the scaffolding truck became stuck open.

Richards was uninjured but was said to be in a state of shock.
