Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Ayrshire hauliers could be set for a jobs bonanza now a Scottish Coal extension to an open-cast mine in Glenbuck has been approved by East Ayrshire Council.

The 555-hectare site at Spireslack is an extension to a site at Airdsgreen. It will operate 24 hours a day, 6 days a week including Sunday morning. Lorries will distribute coal down the A70 to a Scottish Coal depot at Killoch, Ayrshire.

Alan Neish, head of planning and building control at East Ayrshire council, says lorries will travel at the rate of "10 per hour. The extension of the site is ideal from a jobs point of view. It will result in a bonanza for hauliers here. The site is huge with a life of 10 years." he says.

It is expected that more than three million tonnes of coal will be extracted over the 10 years.

A spokesperson for Ayrshirebased haulier Anclersons, which currently distributes coal from Airdsgreen to Killoch, says, "We have an ongoing contract with Scottish Coal.

"It is up to them who will distribute coal from the new site at Spireslack."
