Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A Commer van, having Visatone sound-recording equipment and a body built by Gurney and Ewer, Ltd., Commer agent, of Ruislip, has been purchased by the Twickenham Film Studios. The chassis is an N3 forwardcontrol 2-3-tonner of 12-ft. 9-in. wheelbase.

The body is 14 ft. long behind the cab and a sound-proof partition divides the interior into two compartments. Each window has two panes, one being of ordinary clear glass and the other of dark-tinted glass, so that the van can be converted into a dark-room.

The batteries for operating the recording equipment are housed in lockers beneath the floor and are charged by a generator carried below the floor of the cab and driven by a power take-off. The outfit can be used either in the studio or on location.

A New Air-line Coupling.

The number and variety of garage tools and items of equipment which consume compressed air are now so great that, in order that full advantage may he taken of them, an efficient means for connecting pneumatically operated units with the permanently installed pipe line is essential.

A new Schrader device, designed to meet this requirement, is a quick acting coupling with a number of attractive features. Attached to the flexible tube from the main pipe, it can be connected to the fitting on the tool simply by pushing it on, this operation opening a valve. Removal is as easy, aud as the coupling is withdrawn the air supply is cut off.

The coupling costs 5s. 6d. in swivelling form, and 6s. if equipped for nonswivelling. The maker is A. Schrader's Son Division of Scovill Manufacturing Co., 829, Tyburn Road, Erdington, Birmingham.

A MOBILE CRANE WITH AN OIL ENGINE.

The Ransomes and Rapier mobile crane illustrated on this page embodies an Ailsa Craig oil engine and direct-current electric drive. The system is a particularly interesting one embodying a D.C. variable-speed generator directly coupled to the oil engine. The latter is set to tick over whenever work is not required of the crane and need be speeded up only when power is required. The electrical equipment provides for a separate motor for each crane motion so that all or any of the crane movements can be carried out simultaneously.

The model illustrated has the unusual feature of a separately excited generator, with additional voltage

control by a pedal-operated rheostat. Its capacity is 21 tons at 10 ft. 6 ins. radius and 1/ ton at 17 ft. 6 ins. radius. These cranes are made for normal loads from 1 ton to 16 tons. The manufacturer is Ransomes and Rapier, Ltd., Waterside Works, Ipswich.
