A KENT operator who has been on the dole since his truck was impounded has failed in his bid to get the unit back so he could raise cash from its sale.

Lyminge-based Simon Bartlett had asked South Eastern & Metropolitan Traffic Commissioner Christopher Heaps to return the vehicle on the basis that he would no longer be trading with it and he would like to sell it as he could no longer afford to keep it on the road.

He said than since it was taken he had been unable to work and had to claim unemployment benefit.

The TC said the vehicle had been impounded at Standford in January while loaded with a"barrel-load of ballast and a couple of bits of wood".

Questioned by a traffic examiner. Bartlett had admitted that the vehicle was doing some work in connection with his goundworks business.

He said he did not have a current 0-licence because he was trying to find somewhere to park the truck and he couldn't afford it. He had also said his vehicle tax had not been renewed at the end of December as he was -waiting for some money".

Bartlett confirmed that he had used the vehicle for his business on four days for which tachograph charts were available.

The vehicle was given an immediate prohibition for an inoperative rear direction indicator.

The TC concluded that in view of Bartlett's admissions he could see no grounds for returning the vehicle to him.
