FIRST separate results for Bedford Trucks show that it lost E52.2m last year, largely because of a 27 per cent loss of export business in countries like Nigeria.
The fate of the company, now a division of General Motors' worldwide truck and bus business and totally separate from the Vauxhall car business, parallels that of Leyland, which lost £59m in 1982.
Commenting on the results, Bedford general manager J. T. Battenberg Ill said: "The commercial vehicle markets, both in Britain and in export territories worldwide, remain deeply depressed. The advance in Bedford's UK sales volume in 1983 — up 12.9 per cent — was offset by the decline in exports, so that total sales of 5 3,26 6 units showed only a slight increase over 53,024 in 1982."
