THERE is still a scarcity of tippers in I Lanarkshire because of the volume of construction work now being done in central Scotland and applications for increased capacity are being treated sympathetically. At Glasgow recently the Scottish Licensing Authority, Mr. W. F. Quin, granted James Gifespie, of Airdrie, an additional 5+.-ton tipper on his B licence to carry road and building materials and plant within 40 miles. Evidence was given that the existing

vehicle was working from 6.30 a.m. to 9 p.m. regularly with obvious risk of excessive running and heavy wear and tear. An additional vehicle would meet the legal requirements as well as satisfying customer need.

Efforts had been made to hire tippers but had been largely unsuccessful becawe of the scarcity. There were no objectors and Mr. Quin said that he was satisfied that the indicated need existed, A grant would therefore be made.
