An Example of Clean Design in a Body Providing 1,450 cubic ft. of Loading Space

• ONE would not, at once, associate the outfit featured in.

Lithe accompanying illustrations with machines in the 30 m.p.h. class, but such is the case, and the extraordinary point is that the loading capacity of the body is no less than 1,450 cubic ft. The concern which built the body and supplied the machine—Smith and Blackwell, Ltd., 325, Essex Road, Islington, London, N.1—has, for some considerable time, been producing large-capacity, lightweight Luton-type van bodies, and recently introduced its Essanbec type, of which that illustrated is known as the Essanbee Major.

It is shown mounted on a Commer N.3 long-wheelbase, forward-control chassis, with Baico extension, an alteration, incidentally, which does not adversely affect the chassismaker's guarantee. .

The body framework is of ash, Plymax being used for the side panels, and it is to be noted that this panelling is brought down to the level of the top of the chassis frame members to give a clean and modern appearance. Deal, tongued and grooved and in. thick, is employed for the floor, the square-shaped wheel-arches, clearly shown in one of the illustrations, coming 8 ins, above the floor level. For the roof, special waterproofed canvas is used, this being doped down on to a ply foundation which, in turn, is supported on ash ribs.

The 3-ft. 6-in, tailboard is hinged at floor level and is double-boarded. A feature that will be noted is the use ot two sets of tailboard chains. A serviceable form of box sheet is supplied to give protection to loads carried on the tailboard.

Excellent visibility is provided for the driver, • the lines of the comfortably appointed cab being in keeping with the smart appearance of the Commer radiator grille.

The main dimensions of the body are i—Length, behind driver, 20 ft. ; height, 9 ft. 6 ins. : width, 6 ft. 11 ins. : Luton extension, 5 ft. 5 ins. In works primer, the price of the complete machine is 241S, which, we understand. includes' 32 by 6 T.T. tyre equipment and Bluemel number plates.

Cull's Transport Service, Ltd., High Road, Tottenham. London, has already taken delivery of a number of these vans and further orders are now being executed for the same company.

B. and H.S. Transport Services, Ltd., Angel Road Edmonton, London, has nine similar machines in service, having operated Cormier vehicles since 1935.
