Truck safety recalls increase during '86

• Ford and Mercedes figure prominently in the latest Department of Transport goods vehicle safety recall bulletin covering the first six months of this year.
In that time, according to the DTp, 30 manufacturer recall campaigns were aimed at 126,238 goods vehicles — nearly four times the number that were recalled in the previous six months.
Among the Fords recalled are 10,540 Cargos and Transcontinental (H Series) built, respectively, between November 1980 and February 1986, and January 1975 and December 1983, on which the rear axle hub bearing lock nuts were inadequately torqued during production.
Mercedes vehicles recalled include 27,000 in the 207 to 310 van and chassis cab range built between 1979 and March 1986 on which incomplete en
gagement of the handbrake lever pawl may result in the lever slipping off after application.
Two of the most serious PSV defects were on Leyland Olympian and Dennis Dorchester coaches.
On 47 Olympians built between June 1983 and April 1986 it is possible that the brake supply pipes from the foot valve were assembled incorrectly, which could re
sult in the loss of service brakes.
On 49 Dorchesters built between November 1982 and March 1985, the steering drag link ball joint may become detached.
Among the other goods vehicles recalled are Leyland Roadrunners, Freighters, Cruisers, Constructors and Roadtrains. The bulletin is issued by the Dip, Tollgate House, Houlton Street, Bristol.
