Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

rtA MAXIMUM-CAPACITY tractive unit with a lower unladen weightthan previous models produced by this concern is announced today by E.R.F. Ltd., Sandbach, Cheshire. Bearing the type classification 64GX, the new design weighs 4 tons 10 cwt. complete with fifthwheel coupling and rear wings, the chassis-cab weight without these items being 4 tons 3 cwt.

The standard power unit is the Gardner 6LX 150-b.h.p. diesel, driving through a David Brown five-speed constant-mesh gearbox with either direct or overdrive top gears. Alternatively sixor 10-speed boxes may be specified. Considerable weight is claimed to have been saved by using a Kirkstall double-reduction driving axle, this having spiral-bevel primary reduction gearing, with hub-mounted epicyclic secondary trains and replacing the overhead-worm axle normally used in heavy E.R.F. chassis. The standard tyres are 10-00-20, though further weight can be saved by use of 0-00-20 equipment.

Cam-operated brakes are now employed at both axles, with direct airpressure actuation, and this move also is said to save weight. The chassis frame has 8.0-in. by 3.0-in. by 0.25-in, side members, and the wheelbase is 8 ft. 3 in., the overall length being 15 ft. 5.625 in. The standard cab is the LV plasticspanelled type. For operation at over 24 tons gross train weight extra-heavyduty rear springs can be fitted, as can a 0.3125-in, chassis frame.
