Good news for Widdowson Group, where profits have doubled year on year. Lucia Cockcroft reports.

LEICESTER HAULAGE firm The Widdowson Group doubled its pre-tax profits for the year ending 31 March to £633,314, against a turnover of £22.4m.

The results are good news for the company. which posted a pre-tax profit of only £306,156 in the previous year. Turnover is also up on the 2004 figure of £20.3m.

The Widdowson Group, a prominent member of the regional distribution network Jigsaw,claims to be one of the UK's fastestgrowing distribution operations. with three Midlands depots, 345 staff and 150 vehicles.

Volumes at the company have climbed 20% year-on-year for the past eight years.

The group recently installed an Electronic Data Interchange stock control and order picking service, allowing it to offer this facility as an extra service to customers in a range of industries including textiles, construction and consumer electrical.

It has also entered the marketplace for new vehicles: by the end of 2008 it will have 48 Scania R-Series Topline trucks in its fleet.

Jigsaw Solutions, which is jointly owned by seven regional transport companies and a specialist logistics consultancy, serves domestic and international customers from 30 UK sites. It was formed in May 2002.
