THE TARNISHED image of White Van Man is set for a much needed revamp with a government sponsored programme designed to change their driving habits.
Management consultancy Momenta has won a contract from the Department for Transport (DIT) to develop a guide promoting safe and fuel-efficient driving in the van sector.
Jason Vallint, transport business development manager for Momenta, points out the term White Van Man has negative connotations linked with "speed management, lane discipline and respect for other road users". He adds: "Given the unregulated nature of the sector,it is quite an important step to help professionalise this part of industry."
He reports that this is the first time the MT has adopted such a strategy; it follows a similar programme for truck drivers that started in 2003.
This programme finally trained 6,375 drivers.They were estimated to have reduced their fuel consumption by an average of 10% as a result of their training.
Momenta is due to report to the DfT in the New Year about how a similar programme could be rolled out for van drivers.
