• Indian manufacturer Tata will launch its pickup model and a new van at this month's International Motor Show. The Loadbeta van and pickup share a chassis and Tata's own 2,0litre diesel engine. The Bombay-built van is derived From the Indian market's Tata Sierra: it has rear-wheel drive with double-wishbone independent front suspension and a coil-sprung five-link rear setup (the pickup uses leaf springs). Anti-roll bars are fitted front and rear.
The wheelbase is 2.40m, and the van's proportions are reminiscent of an off-roader with an overall height is 1.77m, width of 1.71m, and ground clearance of 170mm. Tata claims a load capacity of 510k9, for a gross weight of around 2,050kg. The Tata diesel engine is a longitudinally mounted in-line 1,948cc four with indirect injection. It produces 68hp (43kW) at 4,500rpm with 87Ibft (118Nm) of torque at 2,500rpm. The gearbox is a five-speed all-synchromesh manual unit. The Loadbeta van appears to be well equipped: power steering, a tilt-adjustable steering wheel, central locking and electric windows all come as standard. The base price is
