GRIMSBY magistrates were told last week of a lorry driver who drove for 23 hours without rest, committing "the most flagrant contravention" of the law in "one of the worst cases of its type for many years."

Frank C. A. Baker, of Egerton Road, Lowestoft, was fined £5 in each case for failing to take rest from driving, driving for a continuous period of more than five and a half hours, and driving for continuous periods amounting to more than 11 hours in a 24-hour period. He was fined £2 for failing to keep records of hours worked. He pleaded guilty to all offences.

Frank A. Peterson, Ltd, Grimsby, his employers, were fined £10 for allowing Baker to drive without rest and £5 for allowing him to drive for a continuous period of more than five and a half hours. The fi-m which also pleaded guilty, and

Baker, were represented by Mr. S. Harmston, who said it was the firm's and Baker's first offence. Baker was driving against instructions. He could not fill in his records book unassisted.

SEAT SLASHERS SOUGHT

THE increasing number of incidents of slashed seats and obscene defacement of seat backs is causing concern to the Mexborough and Swinton Traction Co., Ltd., Rawmarsh. At least 20 incidents have been reported in the past six months and the company is offering a reward of £2 to any person giving information leading to the conviction of anybody found causing wilful damage.

An official of the company said that in some cases leather was being torn completely from the seats and obscene expressions were being cut into the seats with penknives.
