MR, FRANK S. TAYLOR, general manager of the Newcastle upon Tyne transport undertaking, refers in his annual report to the "crippling burden" of the tax on diesel oil, and points out that during the year under review the department paid over .£146,000 in tax.
The report states that, after deducting working costs and taxes, etc., there was a balance of £.107,474. The motor buses carried 98,791,000 passengers, compared with over 104,500,000 the previous year, while the trolley buses carried 71,705,117 passengers against 75,290,529.
Mr. Taylor urges highway authorities to consider the construction of roads with light-coloured surfaces . because pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles were all more visible against such surfaces.
