• A new shipping service has been introduced between Ringaskiddy (Cork) and Cherbourg, and live animal exports from Ireland are to resume following intervention by the Irish Road Haulage Association, its two partners and the Irish government. "We have a 33% stake in The Purbeck ferry, along with Dundalk Shipping and Cork Port (Gaelic Ferries)," says the IRHA. "It will start to create more shipping room on the continental run.
"We have entered into this on our members' behalf," it adds. "Not just for live exports, but for dry freight as well." The Irish government has long wanted to resume Ireland's livestock exports, worth Li Om a year, and invested Lim in the service, which was subject to EU approval as regulations prevent investing national funds in transport. The RO-RO ship can carry 50 trucks and will operate three times a week.
