The latest transport statistics compiled by the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions (DETR) shows that, in 1996: • Road was the dominant mode of transport for domestic freight, accounting for more than 80% of goods lifted; • The motorway network carried about 17% of all road traffic in the UK, including a third of goods vehicle traffic; • The number of people employed in transport and related industries and services rose by 3.7% on 1995, to L75 million.
