EAST ANGLIAN hauliers have joined their own account counterparts in opposing Cambridgeshire County Council's plan for a ban on heavy vehicles from the A45 trunk road in the county (CM, October 30).
The Road Haulage Association's Eastern district has opposed the plan, saying it could impose an unfair penalty upon operators who need to cross the ban boundary to get to their customers, especially as those customers are unlikely to be prepared to pay the additional cost of diverting vehicles over approved roads.
RHA Eastern district manager Ken Williams said this week that his members sympathise with the residents of Kimbolton, the village with lorry problems which have prompted the ban proposal, and that they would be happy to discourage operators from running through the village. But he said the ban was not the bast way of achieving such ends.
Mr Williams added that the RHA is prepared to pursue the matter to a public inquiry if the council does not modify its proposals.
