FOUR MORE wage claims have been submitted on behalf of hire or reward haulage drivers in England, generally in line with the Transport and General Workers Union's national aim of a £100 basic rate with a reduced working week.
Claims have been lodged by the TGWU in Eastern England, West Cumberland, Teesside, and the North West. The United Road Transport Union has also submitted a North West claim, with a request for a progressive reduction in the working week, starting this year at 39 hours, and working down. It also wants a bereavement allowance.
Claims lodged in Eastern England, Metropolitan and South East, South Wales, and Southern England also include a request for drivers to be able to contract out of the state pension scheme and for an industry scheme to be established.
Meetings between employers and trades union representatives are scheduled for later this month, when the employers are expected to press for overall wage increases (not just basic rates) to be contained within low single figures.
