Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

TWO new forward-control oilengined models of basically similar construction, but equipped with tyres for 3 tons and 4 tons, have been

'added to the Albion range. A new four-cylindered oil engine has been developed for these chassis, which are named the Claymore and are available in a standard wheelbase of 11 ft. 9 in. One of the 4-tonners is to appear at the Scottish Show with a 725-cu.-ft. lightalloy van body and as a complete vehicle weighs under 3 tons unladen. The new engine is a direct-injection unit of 3.96-in, bore and 4.75-in, stroke, with a capacity of 3.83 litres (234 Cu. in.). It develops 60 b.h.p. at 2,200 r.p.m. and the maximum torque of 158 lb.-ft. is obtained at 1,100 r.p.m. The crankcase and cylinder block form an integral casting having dry liners, and the nitride-hardened crankshaft is carried in five copper-lead steel-backed bearings. •

Other -details of the unit include a. Glacier built-in centrifugal oil cleaner, a C.A.V. injection pump driven in tandem with a rotary exhauster, and fully floating gudgeon pins offset to promote quiet running.

New Engine

The Claymore engine is similar in conception to the four-cylindered unit employed in the heavier Clydesdale class, it has helical-toothed gear drive at the front, and renewable inlet and exhaust valve-seat inserts in a one-piece head. The method of obtaining assistance for the brake gear is, however, different. Other Albion models derive a vacuum from the engine air-intake venturi, but the npw unit has an independent exhauster.

A 13-in.-diameter clutch with flexible centre is used and the four-speed gearbox is attached as a unit with the engine, which is supported on a four point mounting in the frame. The silencer is also attached below the gearbox. All the forward gears are in constant mesh, with single helical-tooth form, and engaged by dog clutches for light operation. Ratios of 6.15, 3.52, 1.75 to ! and direct drive are provided.

A two-piece propeller shaft, with Hardy Spicer needle-roller-bearing universal joints, conveys the drive to the overhead worm of a fully floating axle, which has a four-pin differential and 61-in, worm centres. The rear axle, of conventional Albion pattern, has a track of 5 ft. 81 in. and driving shafts of 100-ton nickel-chrome steel. The braking equipment comprises a Clayton Dewandre servo hydraulically operating two-leading-shoe units at all wheels. All brake drums are of 16-in. diameter, the shoes being 24-in, wide at the front and 3A-in. at the rear providing a total frictional area of 374 sq. in. This, in the 4-tanner, affords, over 52 sq. in. friction surface per ton when carrying full load.

The chassis frame is level along the top flange from front to rear and has a maximum depth of the flanges being wide and the section 1-in.

thick. The cross-members are bolted in position, tubular members being employed at all spring-anchorage points.

With full forward control there is 9 ft. 31 in. between the back of the scuttle plate and centre line of the back axle., but it is recommended that the interior body length should not exceed 13 ft. 3 in., the chassis rear overhang being 4 ft. 34 in.

A 15-gallon fuel tank is outrigged at the near side of the frame and .orth vacuum reservoir installed behind th combined servo motor and hydrauli cylinder on the opposite side. A brakc fluid reservoir is installed in the ca adjacent to the driving seat. The spar wheel is mounted below frame level a the rear.

The chassis is supplied with 12-vo lighting and starting equipment, a 7f. amp-hr. battery, and compensatec voltage control for the 240-wa' dynamo. Marks cam-and-doubh roller steering gear is used and th turning circle is about 44 ft.

As a 3-tonner, the Claymore has 7.0( 20-in. tyres of 8-ply rating, providing maximum gross vehicle weight of 6 tor 2 cwt., the dry weight of the chass being about 2 tons 2 cwt_ This modi is designated the FT.25.N.

The FT.27.N 4-ton chassis has 7.51 20-in. 8-ply tyres which increase th permissible gross vehicle weight t 7 tons 3 cwt. The dry chassis weight about 2 tons 4 cwt.
