Normal-control Chassis for 250-cu.-ft.

• Van and Pick-up Bodies has Perkins Three-cylindered Oil Engine, Constant • mesh Gearbox and Hypoid-drive Axle: Low Bonnet Affords Good Close-Vision

AMONG the new models to be exhibited at the second post-war Scottish Show at Kelvin Hall, Glasgow, from November.13-21, will be a Seddon 25-cwt. van with an oil engine. A flat-platform lorry is also to be shown. The Seddon chassis, with 250-cu.-ft.

body, has normal-control-and a low bonnet line, making for improved near visibility. The Perkins P.3 oil engine is fitted in conjunction with a four-speed constant-mesh gearbox.

To provide the low bonnet the engine is mounted deeply in the chassis and the transmission line passes below the cross-members.At the front the engine rests on a Metalastik .unit, in compression and shear,' which is placed transversely ahead of the timing case and inclined to mate with a bracket bolted to the sides of the cylinder block. The rear mountings are taken from the sides of the flywheel bell housing to short brackets with rubber insulation, which are bolted inside the frame channels. Torque-reaction snubbers, in the form of rubber cones, act on the edges of the engine front bracket. _

Engine Component Accessibility.

The Perkins P.3 unit, of 2.36-litre capacity, has an output of 34 b.h.p. at 2,200 r.p.m. and develops 88 lb.-ft. torque. It has no exhauster unit, because the Lockheed braking system is hydraulically operated without vacuum assistance, but a six-bladed fan is provided and an AC• oil-bath air cleaner and silencer is fitted for home and overseas operation. As it is a bonneted vehicle, the engine and auxiliaries, such as the fuel and lubricatingoil filters, which are attached to the cylinder head, are fully accessible from the front.

The four-speed gearbox, with direct-drive top and constant-mesh single-helical gears for the second, third and fourth ratios, has been developed specially for the Seddon 25-cwt. van and the front mounting face mates direct with the engine bell housing without need for an c8 adaptor plate. A Borg and Beck .10-in.-diameter sing dry-plate clutch is specified and the gear !ever is mount directly-on the gearbox top -cover.

4 single Hardy Spicer Shaft links the gearbox to hypoid-drive three-quarter-floating axle of 4-ft. 10L track. This unit has a long nose to give added supp4 to the front bearing. The springs are underSlut Taper-roller bearings are used in the wheel hubs a differential.

Horizontal Brake Lever All four brake drums are of 12-in. diameter, the re drums being finned to improve cooling. The hand-bra lever is attached to the off-side frame member to rl alongside the edge Of the driving seat.

The front axle is a conventional girder-section be with semi-elliptic springs and shock absorbers which a linked from the spring seat to a bracket, attached to t top and side flanges of the chassis frame. Well-ba wheels of 5.50 F pattern, with 7.50-16-in, tyres of 8rating, are used on both axles. The spare wheel is slu below the rear overhang.

The wheelbase is 9 ft. and the frame has chann section longitudinals 51 in. deep and 2 in. wide, wi 2i-in.-diameter tubular members placed to coincide wi the rear spring-hanger brackets. A Z-section inemt is bolted across the frame to support the engine at t front, whilst the second cross-member is an invert -section pressing which is located below the driving at.

Near the front the frame is reduced in depth to 3i in. id the steering box is mounted on the tapering slope give a rake of 30 degrees. The steering gear is the arles cam-and-double-roller pattern with an 18-in.a.meter spring-spoke steering wheel.

Brackets are bolted in the open ends of the frame ngitudinals for direct attachment of the front bumper .r, which is 6 in, deep and is swept round at the ends blend with the wings and fairing.

The cylindrical 81-gallon fuel tank is mounted trailsrsely on the rear overhang. A 12-volt 78-amp.-hr. ttery is carried below the seat. The radiator rests on rubber above the front cross-member, but is screened by a decorative panel. This fairing houses the head and side lamps, whilst the central aperture for radiator cooling is screened by a three-bar chromium-plated grille ana wire mesh.

The wings are boxed to blend with the frontal styling and bonnet, which is of alligator pattern with hinges at the rear. A smart appearance is obtained by merging the scuttle into the wings and recessing the doors, so that an external step to the cab is provided. Fixed glazing is adopted for the two-piece windscreen, the windows being deep and sloping to conform with the general line between the scuttle and roof.

Comfortable Cab

Bucket seats and a bulkhead panel are included in the cab, which is about 5 ft. wide and measures 4 ft. from the scuttle plate to the bulkhead. The sweep of the scuttle and windscreen is continued over the cab to blend with the body, the roof being lined and having an internal height of 5 ft. 3 in.

The body, which is 8 ft. long and 5 ft. 6 in. wide inside, is framed in top-hat-section steel pressings attached to channel bearers, which are in turn secured to longitudinal wooden packing strips. All the exterior panels are of aluminium. To make for ease of stacking the load, the van has square wheelboxes of metal construction.

Following the present trend, the rear doors are carried' on outrigged hinges to provide a full opening and are secured when closed by top, bottom and central locks. The body floor, of tongued-and-groovedboards, is attached to the channel bearers.

Maximum Body Space The van has an overall length of 15 ft 101 in., of which 4 ft. 4 in. is occupied by the rear overhang of the body. This allows a 2-in, protrusion of the door hinges sand locking handle to fall within the legal maximum rear overhang of 50 per cent. of the. 9-ft. wheelbase.

In overall width the Seddon measures 6 ft. 01 in. across the front bumper bar, whilst externally the body tapers from 5 ft. 101 in. at floor level to 5 ft. 3 in. at the roof.

There is a slight variation in the cab furnishing of the platform model, which is based on the same chassis but has a bench-type seat and is complete with metal panel at the back of the cab. On this vehicle the body is carried sufficiently high to avoid using wheelboxes at the rear and is supplied with metal head and tail boards which are fixed and rounded at the corners.

There is also a pick-up version with a cab of similar type to that of the platform lorry, and an all-metal body which encloses the wheel-arches.

At the Scottish Show the Seddon van 'Will be exhibited by Moodie and Co., Glasgow, on Stand 105 and the platform lorry will be on Stand 95, which has been taken by The Bass Rock Motor Co., Ltd., Portobello,
